Sung Chan Chang, Cellist

Cellist Sung Chan Chang began studying the cello at the age of seven. In 2001, he was accepted with honors to the prestigious Seoul Ye-Won School of the Arts, and the following year he received a scholarship to attend the Juilliard Pre-College Division. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the Korean National University of Arts in 2008, followed by a Master of Music from The Juilliard School in 2010. He later received an Artist Diploma from Yale University in 2012 and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Northwestern University in 2020. He currently serves as Associate Principal Cellist of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra.

Chang has studied with many distinguished cellists and pedagogues, including Richard Aaron, HyoungWon Chang, Myung-Wha Chung, André Emelianoff, Hee Duck Lee, Aldo Parisot, and Hans Jørgen Jensen.

An accomplished competition prizewinner, Chang has received top prizes in numerous national and international competitions, including the Korean Music Spring and Fall Competition, Korean Young Artist Competition, Korean Music Journal Competition, Seoul Teenager Competition, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra Concerto Audition, New Jersey Philharmonic Competition, the 44th Sorantin Young Artist International Competition, the Juilliard Concerto Competition, Aspen Concerto Competition, BMF Competition, Joong-Ang Daily News Competition, Music Academy of the West Concerto Competition, and the Northwestern University Concerto/Aria Competition. He was also awarded second prize at the Nan-Pa Competition and the National News Competition, and received prizes at the New Jersey Young Artist Competition and the Isang Yun International Cello Competition.

Chang made his orchestral debut with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra in 2000. Since then, he has appeared as a soloist with ensembles including the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen Orchestra, Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra, Music Academy Festival Orchestra, New Jersey Philharmonic Orchestra, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Chamber Orchestra, and the Seoul National Symphony.

As both a soloist and chamber musician, Chang has performed in major venues such as KBS Hall, Kumho Art Hall, Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall and IBK Chamber Hall, as well as Paul and Morse Halls at Lincoln Center, Peter Jay Sharp Theater, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, Lutkin Hall, and Sprague Hall. He has also participated in renowned festivals including the Music Academy of the West, The Perlman Music Program, Aspen Music Festival, the Great Mountains Music Festival, and the Bowdoin International Music Festival.
